Project Name: Airside S1 Pedestrian Access and Scour Point Upgrade
Contract value: $500,000
Duration: 5 months
Project Overview
BDR Stainless was engaged to deliver a comprehensive Design and Construct package encompassing civil, mechanical, and structural supply and installation for a new personnel access system and scour point overflow catchment solution along the S1 pipeline, located airside at Brisbane International Airport.
Prior to BDR’s involvement, the existing scour points were unsafe to access and operate, presenting significant safety risks to critical infrastructure. Our scope addressed these risks through a safe, engineered solution.
To ensure precision in a highly restricted and operationally sensitive environment, BDR utilised 3D scanning technology for design modelling and fabrication. This enabled accurate, first-time installation, contributing to an on-time and under-budget delivery with minimal margin for error or delay.
Scope of Works Delivered by BDR:
- Design, fabrication, and installation of an integrated aluminium pedestrian access system, facilitating safe personnel access at both the eastern and western entry points.
- Design, fabrication, and installation of scour overflow pipework, directing discharge to a newly installed catchment tank to enable safe and efficient evacuation.
Challenges:
The location of this installation within the Brisbane Airport Corporation (BAC) security perimeter presented significant logistical challenges. As a result, BDR Stainless undertook detailed planning and coordinated execution under strict security protocols.
Design constraints—particularly limitations on the allowable height of the final installation due to BAC regulations—necessitated innovative and practical design solutions. Additionally, restricted space for footing installations led BDR to engineer an integrated walkway and pipe support system, minimising ground penetrations and reducing the need for multiple ground interfaces.
The project also required careful coordination around existing live assets, critical to Brisbane’s infrastructure. These assets, located within a confined and restricted-access area, demanded meticulous planning and the implementation of strict mitigation measures to ensure zero impact or damage throughout the works.
Due to the presence of local venomous fauna, a full-time licensed fauna handler was engaged for the duration of on-site activities to ensure the safety of all personnel, including client representatives.
BDR successfully delivered this project with zero defects or non-conformances. The outcome has ensured the ongoing safe and compliant operation of the scour points, meeting all applicable BAC requirements and Australian Standards.
